kaigou | Nov. 8th, 2009 01:18 am historical romance can bite it. imo. A few weeks ago, I picked up a historical romance solely on the basis of a review over at Dear Author, and even granted that historical romance is so very far from my thing, in this particular instance I was intrigued by the reviewer's observation that the story's conflict was almost entirely internal. I'm used to, and usually prefer to read (and write) stories with a much stronger external conflict, so I was curious how a story works out when the conflict is internal. Well, assuming it's not one of the wants-to-be-literary, all-talk-no-action, kind of Important Work that's doing its best to mimic a French film: lots of people talking about sex and philosophy but not really doing much other than drinking too much wine, angsting a bit, and chain-smoking.
Okay, so the historical romance had none of the chain-smoking and so on, and it was rather intriguing from a deconstructionist viewpoint to read a story that, yes, really was almost entirely internal, but... man. I didn't bother to finish it. Just couldn't, for two reasons.
( The first was more a symptom of how much I'm a modern person, and far from a romantic about any past era, really. )
Shorter kaigou: whomever likes this genre is welcome to it, because that was more than enough for me. Cripes, these stories make Clavell look like an unparalleled linguistic genius, and that's saying something.

kaigou | Nov. 7th, 2009 06:23 pm memage of in-progress I couldn't remember the word-limit on the meme, so I went for "about 1K words characters" or something. (What is that, like 150 words?) Anyway. All current works in progress, mostly, with some on the back burner longer than others.

double_dear | Nov. 7th, 2009 02:54 pm Astro Boy! Oreo's checkup went very well yesterday, and as of last night we are weaning him off the Prednisolone! This makes us very very happy. We're a little nervous about his symptoms coming back, but so far he's doing fine.
While we were waiting for the doctor, another person came in with a little kitty that was meowing like crazy. Oreo heard it and seemed to want to go find that cat, but we don't know if it was because he's desperate for companionship (which doesn't make quite as much sense, because he's seen other cats at the vet before) or because he wanted to help a fellow cat in distress. He's such a good kitty. We are still wanting to get another cat, but we're also still having a hard time seeing any and going, "That's the one!" Also, we currently have no money.
But more importantly, yesterday we saw Astro Boy and it was amazing and wonderful, and we're a little sad we used our free movie tickets on it, because it totally deserves our financial support. If we had money, we'd go see it again.
I think this would be a good movie to go into without knowing a thing about it, because then the shocking stuff will be more like, "Whoa, did they really just do that!?" Though on the other hand, I guess most anime fans would probably have heard a little bit about the premise of Astro Boy. But on the other hand, we only knew the premise of Astro Boy because we recently did that Crunchyroll thing that talks a bunch about Osamu Tezuka's other works, and we did a little reading up on things. So anyway, for those of you who insist on knowing what it's about... ( More reviewy type stuff (spoilers included! )
In sum, it's an awesome movie, and if you were thinking about seeing it but weren't sure you wanted to, you should definitely go see it! And if you didn't even realize it existed but like good family entertainment, you should definitely go see it!
When we walked over to Office Depot to get ink for our printer back when we walked to Office Depot to get ink for our printer, they had DVDs of the series on sale for only ten dollars! We were ready to go right over there and buy one today! except that we really are out of money, and it's really kind of sad. Also, since the series was on... Fox or the WB or something like that, we realized the DVDs might not have a Japanese track, which would be sad. So we'll check, and if they don't, we'll go shopping around other places where we can get the Japanese track.
Today I'm thankful for getting to see Astro Boy, getting to wean Oreo off of his medicine, getting to spend time with Celeste and Sarah last night, crunchy Reese's at the 99cents Only Store, and the adorableness of Astro. Current Mood: happy

setra | Nov. 7th, 2009 01:11 am Work Rambles... Wow. It's now been about two full weeks since I started this post.... I've been working in a store about 55 miles from my home store for those two weeks and my attitude has been all over the map while I've been down there five days a week. (And usually staying overnight for strings of four days at once). [EDIT: 55 miles, not 5. I'm not THAT much of a whiney baby. >.>]
( First Impressions ) Luckily, that rant was cut short because I started watching Arashi no Shukudai-kun first and was too in love with MatsuJun's new hair to care. ( Additional Arashi Babble goes here. )
..... all that was two weeks ago. There's been a lot of development on the work front. I'm actually getting very involved in the store. I'm growing to love the team (more on that later), it's clear that they really have their hearts in the right place. We're slowly getting back on track with freight and recovery. There's a growing sense of ownership with me and the store. And... a lot of other things going on that I don't know how I feel about. I will be down there for at least one week, probably two.
I get the feeling that my home store crew figured out where I was in the last few days. I've gotten more calls for store transfers in two days than I did in the whole last week I was there. :P 3 comments - Leave a comment | |

harmon_rook | Nov. 6th, 2009 04:57 pm KILLER CRAMPS OF DEATH. HOLY CRAP. Thank goodness it's Friday and I've done almost everything I need to do.
On a more positive note, the post office seems to have predicted this and held on to all the packages I had expected to come sooner, and gave them all to me today! I got 7 volumes of manga (Amazon orders and Manga Takeout) plus Persepolis 2, and the manga all consists of series I am very, very eager to read. Time to turn on my little heater and curl up in bed. double_dear | Nov. 6th, 2009 01:07 pm My life as a guinea pig We finished our work early today and now we're just waiting for Leia to come take us to the vet. But after the vet, we get to go see Astro Boy! Yay! We're pretty excited. Then next week we'll be working on the fanbook (dun dun DUN) again, which is a little scary, but also exciting. Fanbooks are really hard, but last time we finished a Fruits Basket fanbook, exciting things happened afterwards, so we're hoping the trend will keep up. Like finishing the fanbook is the quest that triggers the next event.
Now we're looking at the fanbook to see if we can figure out what our workload will be like for the next couple of weeks. All we're getting it, "Wow, that looks like a lot of text." Also, apparently fifteen people actually voted for Ren as their favorite character. Interesting.
I'm not sure what else to talk about... oh, right! I didn't really talk about what we did at the haunted house last week. Really, we did a few different things, but the one worth mentioning the most is the mad scientist's room. There was a table for a lab experiment, and we took turns being that experiment. The tour guides would give the guests a chance to pull The Switch and pretend-electrocute whoever was on the table. It seems like an easy job, but I think all that twitching might have made for quite a workout. Also, I think I bruised my scalp.
What was most interesting was what the tour guides would say to the guests. Most of them were just like, "Who wants to pull the switch and see what happens?" Athena says one of the tour guides would say, "Somebody pull that switch, see if we can turn on the lights." The scariest one was actually from the wife of the guy running the haunted house, who happens to be an adorable little Asian woman. She would bring the guests into the room and say, "This person is almost dead. Who wants to kill her?" It was even scarier when the kids were like, "Yeah!" I sure hope they have a firm hold on reality versus fiction. (Though one of the kids was kind enough to at least say, "Put her out of her misery.") Much preferable was the tour guide who explained that the girl had died on the tour and they were trying to bring her back to life to avoid a lawsuit from her parents. And of course, not related to the experiment thing, we gotta love what Gaston said when he was leading tours: "This is our mad scientist's room. I don't know what he's so upset about."
While one of us was on the experiment table, the other one would be leading tours. We were kind of hoping for a clone effect, but the guests didn't seem to get it. Although there were a few times outside of the mad scientist's room where a guest would be like, "Didn't I just see her...?" So it wasn't entirely a wasted effort.
Today I'm thankful for the bruise on my scalp being healed, finishing that Negima translation before deadline (I didn't realize we were cutting it so close!), getting to see Astro Boy, Leia once again being kind enough to take us to the vet, and being more than halfway through the fanbook (dun dun DUN). Current Mood: excited
